Executive Functioning Coaching

Are You Ready for Executive Functioning Coaching?

William B. Cole Consultants teaches cutting-edge mental strategies, tools and skills to improve executive functioning. Executive function has been called “the management system of the brain”.

Executive functioning revolves around a set of skills which underscores the ability to engage in self-awareness, self-management and self-mastery. We help clients reach a deeper understanding of how their mind and emotions operate so they can achieve more self-discipline, create better habits and reach their goals. A huge aspect of executive functioning is to master attentional control skills. Bill Cole has been a leader in this area for decades. Executive functioning is sometimes known as cognitive control and references the supervisory attentional system.

When our clients master the ability to clear their mind and to be present and calm, amazing things happen. They improve their critical thinking and problem-solving, planning and decision making. Excellence in behavior begins with excellence on the inside. We help our clients manage their mental processes so they can create within themselves the proper mental state that brings forth higher levels of functioning. Bill is a thought leader in the concept of flow and of helping people enter the zone.

Everyone wants to achieve their goals, in a timely fashion, with less frustration, and with excellence. Executive functioning skills facilitate the behaviors directly related to planning and achieving goals. These skills include self-monitoring, self-control, planning, adaptable thinking, working memory, time management and organization.

Executive Functioning (EF) coaching teaches people how to successfully navigate the challenges of school and adult life. We identify mental strengths and weaknesses, and teach skills that help clients organize, plan, prioritize, manage time, maintain focus, self-assess, study and work efficiently.

Executive functioning coaching improves emotional regulation challenges and improves social interactions. Executive function refers to skills that you use to manage everyday tasks like making plans, solving problems and adapting to new situations. The three main skills we focus on are working memory, cognitive flexibility and inhibition control.

We help students and adults develop the higher-order thinking and self-regulation skills they need to succeed in school, in their career and in life.

Bill Cole is a prolific book author and article author. He’s written extensively on stress management and mental wellness, among other topics. Here are a few articles on this topic.

Is Having Mental Wellness The Equivalent Of Being Happy?

Bill Cole, MS, MA

I’m a mental wellness coach, executive coach and performance psychology coach. I frequently have clients come to me asking to help them become happier. They’re not necessarily depressed or down in the dumps. They just want to be happier more often. When I ask them how much of the time they would like to be happy, they often reply, well, as much as possible. Some even say, all the time! I strongly recommend you use your unhappy bouts as growth experiences. I want you to view downtimes as potential uptimes. If you ask yourself, what does my unhappiness have to teach me, that can elicit some self-reflection and introspection that could lead you to a brand new place of self-understanding. Instead of being unhappy about being unhappy, and wishing you could get out of that space as rapidly as possible, dwell in that space a bit and engage in self-exploration of why you believe you might be unhappy. 1234 words

Seven Coping Strategies For Better Mental Wellness

Bill Cole, MS, MA

I’m a mental wellness coach, a performance psychology coach and an executive coach. When people first come to me they complete an extensive assessment that gives me an excellent snapshot of their strengths and capabilities and of the areas they need to work on. Often, they come to me with a very thin tool kit of coping skills. They just haven’t been introduced to critical mental strategies and stress control techniques that can help them with self-regulation. Because they don’t have these skills in place, they simply are unable to handle the stress, pressures and problems that come their way. There’s nothing innately wrong with them as people. They don’t have character flaws. They’re not lazy. They just don’t have the proper array of coping strategies that will help them handle the difficulties they face. This article describes seven coping skills you can put to good use immediately, in whatever performance arena you’re in, or simply in daily life. 1225 words.

Some people love to take tests. They see them as a challenge and a puzzle to be solved. Other people see test taking as a threat and something to be avoided at all costs. Whichever camp you are in, test-taking does carry some stress. To minimize this stress, the smart test taker considers as many of the stressors that surround tests, both before and during, and devises ways to surmount them. Some of these can be avoided. Some can be changed. But many stressors simply have to be endured. That's where excellent preparation and mental toughness come in. Mental toughness is the ability to maintain focus, discipline and confidence in the face of stress. To perform to your potential in any test, you have to have this toughness. The key is to be comfortable while you are uncomfortable.

Many students find writing papers and essays to be distasteful and difficult. A large percentage of the population has writer’s block. Bill has a formal assessment you can take to determine the degree of writers block you have, and he will give you dozens of mental strategies for overcoming writer’s block.

Testimonials For Bill’s Coaching In Performance Psychology

"Bill Cole is a pioneer in performance psychology."
USA Today

"A world-renowned peak performance coach."
The BBC

"I worked with Bill when I was studying for my ophthalmology board exam, a huge career mile marker and one that was making me fearful and anxious. I knew that I needed to take control of my mindset in order to study effectively and perform at my peak level on exam day. I also knew that I needed some help. I turned to Bill and couldn’t be happier that I did. He is an extraordinary coach. Bill explains complicated concepts in easy-to-understand ways, and has a calm and confident demeanor that settles even the most anxious nerves. I drew calm and confidence from my phone sessions with Bill. And the skills that I developed during my conversations with him, including visualization techniques, paid off big time when I was studying for my board exam and when I arrived on exam day. The mental game that Bill helped me get a handle on filled me with deep-seated confidence when it came time for me to take the exam. I felt like I was “in the zone” during the entire 4-hour, 250 multiple-choice question endeavor. At times, I actually caught myself enjoying the experience of taking the exam. In my mind, passing was a foregone conclusion. When I found out that I did pass, it was one of the best moments of my life. And I couldn’t have done it without the strategies and insights that I learned from Bill Cole—I’m sure of that."

Bill’s Background As An Educator

Bill knew he always wanted to be a teacher from his earliest years. He has been a teacher, coach and consultant since the 1970's. He trained as a teacher as an undergraduate, completed a student teaching internship, and has taught at all levels in education: Private schools, public schools, junior colleges, colleges, universities, and he founded his own teaching academy. He has held a lifetime teaching credential in California since 1989. He taught college for over 15 years, teaching stress management, human development, theories of coaching and other education classes. He was a master teacher and trainer of teachers in college for years. Currently, he also trains and certifies teachers and coaches worldwide in his peak performance system:

Bill’s mission is to help young people realize the potential they truly have and to help them create strategies to bring that potential out in academics and life itself.

With all his years of experience in teaching and coaching kids from ages eight to young adulthood, Bill has developed a special ability to create fast rapport and put them at ease in a coaching session. He’s a good listener, sincere, and he uses my sense of humor and intriguing questions to engage them in the process.

With 25 years of coaching experience, Bill Cole defines coaching as 'an action-oriented art where I collaborate with the client and together we advance specifically where they want to go.' Cole...believes that in order to be coached, 'the motivation has to come from the person. They have to really want it as opposed to my selling it to them. The client needs to find a coach who has specific expertise and a deep knowledge of the defined area so that there is a matching up of the client's need with the coach's experience. I call this 'the wisdom factor', because then the coach can navigate these waters astutely, since he's either been there or has worked with a lot of clients in that area. This approach is critical."
Bill Cole MS, MA, as quoted in the article "How Coaches Give A Boost To Careers", The San Francisco Examiner
