Ten Interview Bloopers To Avoid

Bill Cole, MS, MA

If you could be a fly on the wall of an interview room, you would not believe your eyes or ears. Job-seekers say and do the strangest things. Here is a quick list of the most common errors people make in interviews. Memorize this list, and vow never to fall for these.

  1. Rushing In At The Last Moment: You will feel and appear out of control, and your agitated mental state will ruin your answers and poise.

  2. Talking Too Little: You are there to sell yourself. To do that, you must talk. The interviewer cannot read your mind.

  3. Too Much Superficiality: Showing a lack of intellect or confidence, or failure to disclose, or complete your ideas, or go deeply into subjects.

  4. Too Little Eye Contact: Shifty and evasive looks mean low confidence or untrustworthiness, in the minds of interviewers.

  5. Too Much Eye Contact: Staring a laser hole in the interviewer's skull does not come across well. At least this is better than no eye contact. For best results, vary what you look at and be as natural as possible.

  6. Under Dressing: Immediate rejection. Shows poor judgment.

  7. Over Dressing: This is not as bad as showing up like you expect a frat party, but you should match your dress to the company.

  8. Winging It: There is no way anyone can just "show up" and expect to come across as a serious candidate.

  9. Failure To Attain Rapport: You must achieve a level of comfort with your interviewer by engaging in small talk or by finding similarities.

  10. Failure To Send A Thank You Note: The final kiss of death. Bye-bye.

So there they are, the top ten worst blunders, boo-boos and bloopers possible in the interview game. Know these and then go play the game to win.
