In 2014 mental game coach Bill was invited to fly to Hollywood to be on camera for a film documentary, named The Hurt Business. The film is coming out in September 29, 2016 all across the world. Bill was asked about the psychological dimensions of the MMA phenomenon. Bill talked about the zone, the stress, why people choke, the pressures of being in the spotlight, how MMA fighters train their minds, how they handle setbacks and injuries and how they manage their career paths from a mental perspective.

"The Hurt Business" was created by the same producers of "Bowling for Columbine", "Fahrenheit 9/11" and "Generation Iron". The film examines the explosive trajectory of mixed martial arts fighting through the eyes of today's top stars, and recent past stars of the sport.

The film analyzes the people involved in the world of MMA, looks at their personal lives, how they train, and gauges the mental and physical damage they’ve suffered. The film interviewed sports psychologists, neurologists and sociologists, and government officials for their insights. One conclusion is that fame in MMA is a very hard and unforgiving road.

trailer from that movie project.

Bill's voice can be heard at 1:11: "I get people crying in my office, thinking their life is over, because they've lost a really big match. I've even worried about a few people--suicide."

This article appeared in Business Insider magazine in an article named "5 questions you should ask in an interview for an internship you really want", by writer Katherine Noel, which was published on April 8, 2016.

Bill was asked about good questions to ask, and questions to avoid asking. Here are his questions and his answers.

1. What are some of the key skills and abilities necessary for someone to succeed in this position?

If you ask this early in an interview, it can guide your entire strategy. You can tell the interviewer how your strengths match up with what the company is seeking.

2. If I get the internship, how do I earn top marks on my performance review?

This marks you as eager to reach for excellence. Everyone wants an ambitious new hire.

3. Now that you know more about me, how do you think I can best help the company?

You want to know what the interviewer thinks about the fit. The question also potentially reveals what he or she sees you working on in the position.

4. Is there anything else I can answer for you? I want to be as complete as possible.

You ask this to gauge the interest level of the interviewer and to get feedback.

5. What can I do or provide for you when I follow up?

By asking this wrap-up question, you appear thorough, helpful, and willing to make sure nothing is left to chance.

News Release: February 23, 2016 - Silicon Valley, California
William B. Cole Consultants CEO Bill Cole, MS, MA was interviewed as an expert on sports psychology in Foxnews.com/health for the article "Delonte West Photos Troubling For Player With History Of Mental Illness", by writer Alexandria Hein.

Bill Cole, MS, MA, was interviewed about former NBA player Delonte West wandering around shoeless in a hospital gown outside a Houston-area Jack in the Box appearing to be a somber reminder of the downward spiral many celebrities publicly embark on when their mental illness goes untreated. This article appeared in Foxnews.com/health in an article named "Delonte West Photos Troubling For Player With History Of Mental Illness", by writer Alexandria Hein, which was published on February 23, 2016.

The story:

http://www.foxnews.com/health/2016/02/23/delonte-west-photos-troubling-for-player-with-history-mental-illness.html

Fo
rmer NBA player Delonte West has previously discussed his diagnosis of bi-polar disorder. Perhaps he was off his meds again, but he was found disoriented, in Houston recently. This seems to be an all-too-familiar hallmark of mental illness that is left untreated.

West's eight-year NBA career ended in 2012 though he had many highlights, playing in over 400 games and finishing with more than 4,000 points on the board. During his career, he reportedly made $16 million as a player for the Boston, Seattle, Cleveland, and Dallas teams.

His off-the-court life happened to be more troubled and often caused complications for him during his career. One of the biggest rumors followed his diagnosis for bipolar disorder in 2008.

Bill was quoted as saying: "Mental illness can hit anyone, even former professional athletes. Bipolars are noted for "not" continuing medications. They start to feel normal and don't think they need meds and situations like this occur. Bipolar disorder usually lasts through a lifetime. Episodes of mania and depression typically come back over time, even without medication. Maybe that's what happened here" Yahoo Sports has called Bill Cole "a leading author on sports psychology".

The British Broadcasting Corporation (The BBC) called Bill "A world-renowned peak performance coach."

News Release: June 1, 2015 - Silicon Valley, California
William B. Cole Consultants CEO Bill Cole, MS, MA is interviewed as a performance psychology expert for the WebMD Magazine, and on
webmd.com.

Bill Cole, MS, MA was interviewed as a performance psychology expert for the June 2015 cover story in the WebMD Magazine webmd.com and online, entitled "Not Your Average Joe: Actor Joe Manganiello is proof there's no magic pill for fitness — just hard work." by writer Lauren Paige Kennedy, on the issues around how to create personal discipline for sustainable peak performance in fitness training.

Read the
article on webMD.com or download the PDF file of the article.

The article asked questions around the topic of self-discipline. Why do some people have it in spades, while others struggle so significantly with self-motivation and can't seem to get off the couch?

This article was the cover story, about the actor Joe Manganiello (True Blood, Magic Mike), who is famous for his super-fit form. Learn more about Joe on
Wikipedia and the Internet Movie Data Base.

He attributes it to his work ethic, daily gym sessions, and self-discipline-and in his younger years he was a scrawny kid who showed no promise of ever being a body builder. He is literally now a self-made man. Mr. Manganiello is also a best-selling author and a documentary film producer and director. He applies self-discipline toward every one of his goals to achieve success.

Mr. Cole was asked about self-discipline: whether (and how) it can be learned, and for his suggestions and tips for building a better "self-motivation muscle."

Here are some questions posed to Mr. Cole, with his answers:

1. In your experience, why do some people seem to struggle with self-discipline while others find it easy?

The ones who struggle try to force themselves. The ones who succeed come at the project from an inner joy and excitement.

"If your Why is big enough, anything is possible".

Create inspiring, exciting goals and they will PULL YOU toward them, without you having to push.

So-so goals are so bland that they don't excite anybody, so think BIG and go on an exciting adventure.

Shoot for the stars and if you miss, at least you'll hit the MOON.

2. Is developing discipline akin to creating a new habit, i.e. the more you do it, the easier it becomes?

Yes, discipline can take on a life of its own, once you set the proper conditions.

I use a four-step process, leading to sustainable peak performance:

  1. ACTION

  2. TRACTION

  3. MOMENTUM

  4. VELOCITY

This equals SUSTAINABLE PEAK PERFORMANCE.

Schedule regular exercise periods in your planner, and mark them in a bright color so you MUST see them.

Set your PDA or computer to remind you to workout at a certain time each day, and you'll never forget.

Turn what you do into bragging rights (I just ran the ABC hill yesterday—what a killer!!) and that will motivate you.

3. Are there lessons we can learn in the gym or the playing field that will help us to succeed in business? In relationships?

Use your training for MULTIPLE REASONS. That strengthens your resolve and motivation. One is to be more fit. Another could be for personal growth. Another would be to become more knowledgeable so you can train and lead others—the path to mastery.

I often have parents hire me as their kid's mental game coach for their sport AND life. They learn parallel lessons as they go.

The athlete with self-knowledge, achieves. Sport and fitness reveals us to ourselves. But we must keep our eyes open.

4. What specific tips can you recommend to learn and apply self-control and self-motivation to develop a stronger "discipline muscle"?

Look for and get good at noticing the tiniest improvements. No one ever gets bored of getting better. Celebrate each incremental improvement. This gives you traction and hope, and leads to optimism.

Don't call your workout system a program. Call it a training mission. Link your training to a goal that requires fitness to accomplish. You want to run that mini-iron man. You want to fit into the nice outfit you bought for the wedding.

Sign up for an event or sport or activity that requires that you train for it. This takes your fitness program from "I have to workout" to "I am on a mission to workout".

Plan in all your fitness/health/diet tasks for the week. Leave nothing to chance. Don't say, I will work out if I have time today." Build it in to your schedule, and work OTHER activities around that.

News Release: April 28, 2015 - Silicon Valley, California
William B. Cole Consultants CEO Bill Cole, MS, MA is interviewed as a sport psychology expert on dailyburn.com/life/, by writer Sarah Richards.

Bill Cole, MS, MA was interviewed as a sport psychology expert on http://dailyburn.com/life/, in an article entitled "Is Chronic Stress Wrecking Your Workouts?" by writer Sarah Richards. Bill was asked for advice on how to prevent stress from interfering with our gym goals, and what to do to prevent this from happening in the future.

Some specific questions asked of Bill:

  1. How does work and life stress prevent you from giving your all to you workouts?

  2. How do you stop obsessing about work or relationship problems at the gym, instead of focusing on your workouts?

  3. Does stress leave you so depleted you feel like quitting in the middle of class?

  4. Does feeling wound up make it hard to settle into a good run?

  5. How do you regulate your inner state before or while you're working out?

Bill talked about a number of the elements of the zone. The main goal is to live in the NOW. Here are some other mental game strategies he provided.

Compartmentalize your life activities into segments and be present for each one in a serial fashion.

Assure your mind you will pay attention to its worries and concerns later, after the workout.

A workout is a "moving meditation".

Be present to be safe. Don't allow your mind to wander when engaged in a task. Refocus your mind as needed.

Many people start a session badly and extrapolate that the session will be a complete waste, and that they already failed. Instead, set three main goals for every workout. This way, you can always have a successful workout and never have a "wasted time":

  1. What can I learn?

  2. What can I improve?

  3. What can I enjoy?

Anger at not meeting targets and goals gets in the way of a workout.

Urgency is the killer of the now.

Expectations can be too high. Be realistic.

Use the three time zones to stop time travel and to refocus: Past–present–future.

The Past–regrets, anger, reliving disasters.

The Future–what ifs, fears, picturing disasters, explaining failures.

The Now–where we want to be.

Reduce "time travel" by refocusing continuously.

How to regulate your inner state.

Awareness is the #1 strategy.

Control the controllables. Let the rest go. (Or have a good plan for blocking the externals!!)

Be aware of breath, muscles, thoughts, images, self-talk, emotions, behavior.

The breath is the window to stress control.

Ratio breathing.

Feel and listen to the breath.

News Release: October 31, 2014 - Silicon Valley, California
William B. Cole Consultants CEO Bill Cole, MS, MA is interviewed as an interview coaching expert for the popular career website Dice.com.

Bill Cole, MS, MA was interviewed as an interview coaching expert for a story on the career website Dice.com, entitled "5 Ways to Finesse Illegal Interview Questions", authored by Elisabeth Kasson.

The article focused on how to deflect or answer illegal and/or inappropriate interview questions. Mr. Cole explained how to deal with personal, illegal, intrusive and uncomfortable questions in an interview. He provided these strategies:

  1. Be tactful, and keep advancing the conversation. This approach is the most artful.

  2. Change the subject, dance around the issue, answer only part of the question, or ask a question of the interviewer.

  3. Respond by saying "That's an interesting question. I've never been asked that in a job interview. Can you tell me why you asked it?" If that doesn't throw them off, restate your commitment to doing the best job possible.

  4. You must be careful that your response doesn't harm you, or lock you into something that they can use against you in the future.

  5. If the interview is going badly and you determine that perhaps you may not even want to work for this company, play along and use it as practice for future interviews.

  6. Inform the interviewer that you don't believe there's a good fit between you and the organization, or tell them you won't answer illegal questions; in either case, leave.

Bill Cole, MS, MA, is the author of the book The Interview Success Guide, which is a 216-page master blueprint that helps people understand and navigate the interview process so they can mount a successful interview campaign. News Release: September 5, 2014 - Silicon Valley, California
William B. Cole Consultants CEO Bill Cole, MS, MA is interviewed as a sports psychology expert for the BBC Magazine on line.

Bill Cole, MS, MA was interviewed as a sports psychology expert for a story in the BBC Magazine on line, entitled "One Shot: How Do Athletes Perform Under The Greatest Pressure?" by Peter Crutchley, on the issues around how to handle huge pressure in sport.

This was the reality Belfast boxer Carl Frampton faced in September 2014 as he prepared for his shot at becoming a world champion, when he faced Spain's Kiko Martinez for the IBF world super-bantamweight title.

The article begins by asking a powerful question:

What if you went into work tomorrow knowing that the project you're working on that day would define your whole career and maybe your life?

Mr. Cole was quoted as saying, "The odd paradox of this situation is to not fall victim to the 'do or die' mindset. The athlete can choose to use this excitement for extra energy, or become overwhelmed with the gravity of the situation. It really is a mental decision that has to be made. Caring too much is the number one reason why athletes fail to produce their optimum performance on the biggest stage."

Mr. Cole said that having an emotional and mental edge is crucial. He said "I call this killer instinct. An athlete does not want to be relaxed and easy-going, they want to be keyed up and ready to pounce. They want to be the calm centre inside the raging hurricane swirling about them. Experienced and confident athletes call this 'will to win'. Less experienced athletes call it 'fear of failure'. It's a choice the athlete makes in advance, giving them both energy and peace of mind. That is the potent mix that drives champions to the heights."

Mr. Cole always asks an athlete, particularly before an important event: "Would you rather be arrogant or be lacking in self-belief? If they answer 'I don't want to be considered arrogant', that is a trouble sign. I want my athletes to believe that they are as good, if not better, than anyone they will ever meet. Self-doubt is an absolute deal-killer and it can plague any athlete. A good athlete always straddles that fine line between lack of confidence and the overblown arrogant cockiness we see in some athletes.

Mr. Cole continued, "Give me the over-confident athlete, any day. That person I can throttle back and talk sense into. But if there is a lack of fire in the belly, that is extraordinarily difficult to muster out of thin air; impossible, often, on demand before a big event. By then it's too late."

Mr. Cole believes it is a major mistake for an athlete to change his or her normal preparation just because they face a major event. He said "I suggest the athlete stick to their well-known schedule and training regimen, as far as is possible, within a month leading up to the event. Changes after that require a learning curve and can be unsettling. Better to go with the tried and true with conviction, than a half-hearted attempt with techniques you don't really trust yet. If they can use a sport psychologist a few months out, great. The best sport psychologists teach mental skills and skills take time to learn and master, so they can hold up under pressure."

Mr. Cole had some targeted advice for Carl Frampton as he embarked upon his career-defining fight. He said, "Carl, this is your opportunity. You know there are no guarantees, nor would you want a guarantee if one were offered. You want an adventure and a memorable experience. Isn't that what life, and boxing, is all about?"

The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) has called Bill Cole "A world-renowned peak performance coach."

Bill Cole, MS, MA, is one of the world's leading sport psychology consultants. Mr. Cole is also the founder of the
International Mental Game Coaching Association, and has worked as an NCAA Division I head coach, a sport psychology coach for the Stanford University Baseball and the Israeli Davis Cup Tennis Team. News Release: March 22, 2014 - Silicon Valley, California
William B. Cole Consultants CEO Bill Cole, MS, MA is interviewed as a sport psychology expert on the world's largest sports radio station talkSPORT, in London, England, on the Extra Time show, with Matt Forde.

Bill Cole, MS, MA was interviewed as a sport psychology expert on the world's largest sports radio station, talkSPORT, in London, England, on the Extra Time show, with Matt Forde. The segment asked the question: How do top athletes prepare mentally for huge competitions, and how do they handle the mind games that inevitably arise?

The questions asked of Bill revolved around Carl Froch employing a top Olympic GB Spots Psychologist to help him through his huge rematch with George Groves. This is the biggest fight in British boxing in the last 10 years between two of the UK's top fighters. Carl Froch is seeking psychological help before his return world super-middleweight title fight with George Groves at an already sold-out Wembley Stadium on 31 May, a £20 million contest which he thinks could be determined by mind over matter.

Froch beat Groves in 2013 thanks to a contentious stoppage after Groves had been clearly winning on points. Underdog Groves had "wound up" Froch by impudently pricking his renowned ego at every turn. Learn
more about the 2013 contest and rematch.

Froch is the reigning IBF champion at super middleweight, having defeated Lucian Bute for the title, and on 25 May 2013 Froch became the WBA unified champion after defeating Mikkel Kessler.

Froch was quoted as saying,
"He did a good job on me because when I got into the ring after listening to his rubbish, all I wanted to do was punch his face in instead of boxing him. I'm not going to let it happen again. Mentally I was not at the races. Physically I was in good shape but mentally I wasn't doing what I needed to do, I had let that idiot boy get under my skin."

Bill discussed the psychology of gamesmanship and gave mental game tips on these issues:

  1. How not to allow competitors to rent space in your head.
  2. Can you want to win too much?
  3. Not allowing ego to take over instead of trained instinct.
  4. Take the insults and show your inner security. Never let them see you sweat.
  5. Don't be insulted—be challenged.
  6. Play the game off the mat as well as on.
  7. Control what you can and let the rest go—can't control verbal taunts. You can only control your reaction.
  8. How to USE mind games for your own power.
  9. How to VIEW opponents who use mind games.

William B. Cole Consultants CEO Bill Cole, MS, MA is interviewed as an interview coaching expert for the Riley Guide Careers Blog.

Bill Cole, MS, MA was interviewed as an interview coaching expert for a story in the Riley Guide Careers Blog, entitled "How To Answer Oddball Interview Questions" by Ben Thomas.

The article focused on how to handle the most unusual questions an interviewer can conjure.

Mr. Cole explained how to deal with oddball, weird, far-flung, playful and downright strange questions in an interview. Mr. Cole was quoted as saying:
"The point to remember is, every question in the interview has a purpose. Your job as the interviewee is to figure out if the question is just for fun, or if there's something more serious behind it. Don't give a dismissive answer, like, 'I thought I was going to get a serious question; can you ask another one?' The question is there for a reason, so at least make sure your answer is interesting."

News Release: March 8, 2013 - Silicon Valley, California
William B. Cole Consultants CEO Bill Cole, MS, MA is interviewed as a sport psychology coaching expert for Yahoo! Sports.

Bill Cole, MS, MA was interviewed as a sport psychology coaching expert for Yahoo! Sports. The article was entitled "The Blackhawks' Streak: Everything You Need To Know, And Some Things You Probably Don't", by Martin Rogers. The piece spoke about the Chicago Blackhawks' 30-game winning streak, the second most famous in the history of the NHL.

Mr. Cole talked about the psychology of streaks, the trap of playing not to lose, how to maintain streaks, how a streak is an extended zone experience, how rookies and veterans may view streaks differently, how coaches can enhance or detract from a streak, and how media pressure factors into maintaining a streak.

An excerpt from the article:

"Just like beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so is pressure," says Bill Cole, founder and president of the International Mental Game Coaching Association and a leading author on sports psychology. "To some guys this level of success will feel correct and natural to them and they just roll with it. "But perhaps you're a young player, or a veteran who hasn't had so much success in your career, it might seem surreal. If it does, that person can self-derail, they will fight it."

This is where the leadership provided by Quenneville and his senior players really starts to kick in. Cole believes such a run of performance would have been impossible without shrewd marshaling from the 54-year-old coach.

"The mindset on a team streak is very much on an individual basis and it is important how the coach handles it," Cole explained. "You don't want a coach coming and saying, 'Hey guys, we're on this run, let's just keep it going.' Their job is to stop you from getting fat and happy. Sometimes their words may even come across as negative, by raising the possibility that losing could happen if you don't perform well."

Given that the achievement itself is in some ways a statistical creation - the Blackhawks have lost in three shootouts but the streak continues as long as they are at least tied after overtime - Cole also warns against a scenario where it becomes so important that team members start "playing not to lose." Again, he says, experienced players know how to identify and avoid such mental traps.

Those empty weeks towards the end of last year when hockey was frozen out by the collective bargaining dispute has led to a compacted schedule of 48 games, with fewer off-days than in a typical campaign.

That may have helped the Blackhawks gain momentum, but also increased the physical toll on players who have considerably less opportunity to rest their aching limbs and mend those niggling knocks.

However, Cole insists that the strain of quick turnarounds and packed travel schedules could be outweighed by a mental benefit.

"Tiredness could be their friend," Cole said. "You don't want to think, 'How are we doing this?' too much. And the tight schedule cuts into the dead time. A lot of experienced players often perform better when they are tired anyways, it almost serves to release mental pressure."

Bill Cole, MS, MA, is a mental game coach to athletes and coaches, politicians, professional speakers and trainers, the entertainment industry, executives and business professionals. The British Broadcasting Corporation (The BBC) called him "A world-renowned peak performance coach." He has been the mental coach or sports psychology consultant with athletes or coaches of 17 world and national teams, eight international and Olympic teams, 31 professional sports teams, associations or leagues, and of athletes who have won 35 world and national championships. He has been the mental trainer for thousands of athletes in over 75 sports, at all ages and skill levels and has been a leader in the field of mental training for over 30 years. He was the first person in the world to earn an undergraduate degree in sports psychology, and is also the founder and President of the International Mental Game Coaching Association, which trains and certifies mental coaches worldwide.

News Release: December 18, 2012 - Silicon Valley, California
William B. Cole Consultants CEO Bill Cole, MS, MA is interviewed as a sports psychology expert for BBC Magazine.

Bill Cole, MS, MA was interviewed as a sports psychology expert for a story in BBC Magazine, entitled "Why Do So Many Athletes Struggle To Cope With Retirement?" by Peter Crutchley, on the issues around retirement for elite and professional athletes. Many athletes struggle to cope with retirement. The article focused on why this happens and how to manage the inevitable let-down that most athletes feel when their exalted world of high-end celebrity sport ends. See the complete article at www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/20646102

The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) has called Bill Cole " A world-renowned peak performance coach."

Famed boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard and Britain's double Olympic rowing champion James Cracknell were interviewed for this piece, as well as other well-known sport psychology coaches, including Sports psychologist Andrea Firth-Clark, from the University of Greenwich, and Sports psychologist Dr. Victor Thompson.

Mr. Cole was quoted as saying, "Athletes identify themselves by what they do. Take that away and they feel abandoned and naked and at a loss for how to make sense of it. It's as if a major piece of themselves has gone missing. Athletes had regular doses of serotonin daily for many years, and suddenly, that has decreased or stopped outright. That is a huge upset to the chemistry of the body. Even some retired athletes who continue to exercise fail to get the endorphin highs since they no longer compete."

Bill Cole, MS, MA, is one of the world's leading sport psychology consultants. Mr. Cole is also the founder of the International Mental Game Coaching Association, and has worked as an NCAA Division I head coach, a sport psychology coach for the Stanford University Baseball and the Israeli Davis Cup Tennis Team. Mr. Cole has served as a sports psychology consultant for various elite level athletes, including 2006 Olympic Gold Medalist and two-time world curling champion Russ Howard. He has been the mental game coach to professional players who have had wins over Pete Sampras, Andy Roddick, Marat Safin, Michael Chang and Tim Henman. Mr. Cole also has been an NCAA Division I College Head Coach in tennis, the Sports Psychology Coach for the Israeli Davis Cup Team, and has coached in the US and Europe on the ATP Tour. Bill was inducted into a tennis hall of fame for his accomplishments as a player and coach. Bill has advised, coached or consulted with members or coaches of 13 national and world teams, six international and Olympic teams and 27 professional sports teams or leagues. He has been mental coach or consultant to Olympic athletes who have won bronze, silver and gold medals.

News Release: July 25, 2012 - Silicon Valley, California
William B. Cole Consultants CEO Bill Cole, MS, MA is interviewed as a sport psychology expert for New Yorker Magazine.

Bill Cole, MS, MA was interviewed as a sport psychology expert for a story in New Yorker Magazine, entitled "Dealing With Olympic Failure" by Reeves Wiedeman, on July 25, 2012.

The article focused on how an athlete can make a critical mental error-leading to a mental lapse-at a moment when the brass ring (or in the case of the Olympics, a gold one) is easily within their grasp. The story focuses on US Olympic air-rifle shooter Matt Emmons, who won a gold medal in Athens in 2004 and a silver medal in Beijing in 2008. In two of his other events Emmons was in the lead for the gold, and faltered at the last possible moment, losing the gold. These memories have haunted him since.

Here is the portion of the interview with Bill Cole.

"Every time he gives a press conference the media bring it up again, and at some level he relives the agony. Top that off with the fear of leaving a legacy as 'The guy who failed three times when he had the medal within an inch of his hand,' and you have some real pressure to contend with." Cole says that after his experiences at the Olympics, Emmons might suffer from what he calls 'failure syndrome,' a sort of post-traumatic stress disorder for athletes. He suggests three possible solutions:

  1. Define failure on your own terms. Did you fail or was it a 'learning situation'?
  2. Extract all the wisdom from the situation and then never bring it up again.
  3. Turn lemons into lemonade. Find something humorous about it and refer to the situation that way.

News Release: May 17, 2012 - Silicon Valley, California
William B. Cole Consultants CEO Bill Cole, MS, MA is interviewed as a peak performance expert for the BBC.

Bill Cole, MS, MA was interviewed as a peak performance expert for a story by the BBC, entitled "
Inside The Mind Of The Road Racer" on May 17, 2012.

The article asked the question, What is it that makes motorbike racers willing to risk their lives competing at speeds of over 200 mph on public roads?

Here is the portion of the interview with Bill Cole.

Bill Cole, a world-renowned peak performance coach based in California, has worked across more than 75 different sports, but he considers road racing to have unique mental demands. "A motorcycle racer might be injured, maimed or killed while competing. It is this willingness to flirt with potential life-altering events, on the razor's edge, that distinguishes racers," he said. Road racers would appear to be a different breed mentally. In psychological terms they are considered "sensation seekers". "Riders love stressful activities for the release of epinephrine (adrenaline) and endorphins," Cole said.

Peak performance coach Bill Cole suggests that risk taking is part of an individual's genetic personality make up with nature and nurture both playing a part in creating and moulding elite level riders. "There seems to be evidence for both a physiological and biochemical basis for the sensation seeking trait", he said.

Bill Cole, MS, MA, is a mental toughness coach to athletes and coaches, politicians, professional speakers and trainers, executives and business professionals. He has been the mental coach or sports psychology consultant with athletes or coaches of 17 world and national teams, eight international and Olympic teams, 31 professional sports teams, associations or leagues, and of athletes who have won 35 world and national championships. He was the first person in the world to earn an undergraduate degree in sports psychology, and is also the founder and President of the International Mental Game Coaching Association, which trains and certifies mental coaches worldwide.

Another top sport psychology expert cited in this article was Dr. Craig Mahoney, past Chair of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) and the first person in the UK to hold dual accreditation from BASES, for Exercise Physiology and Sport Psychology.

News Release: April 9, 2012 - Silicon Valley, California
William B. Cole Consultants CEO Bill Cole, MS, MA is interviewed as a mental toughness expert for
Chief Learning Officer Magazine.

Bill Cole, MS, MA was interviewed as a mental toughness expert for a story in Chief Learning Officer Magazine, entitled "How to Develop Mental Toughness in Leaders" by Associate Editor Frank Kalman, on April 9, 2012.

The article focused on how business leaders, much like athletes, need to be psychologically ready to play, and how mentoring and coaching can help them cultivate this trait.

Mr. Cole was quoted as saying, "Developing mental toughness, however, is no small task. More than anything, teaching mental toughness in others demands commitment and dedication - both from the teacher and the student. Leaders seeking to acquire mental toughness can start by finding a mentor or coach who is willing to help guide them. While classroom and group settings are sufficient to lay the groundwork for developing the skill, one-on-one mentoring is best to provide for individuals' situations and learning needs.

Classroom teaching is just kind of the starting point. You can get a discussion going in a classroom, but then the deep learning has to happen after that initial talk is given. Once a coach or mentor is in place, leaders should then find a role model - someone who exhibits admirable mental toughness who they can reach out to.

Having a role model who embodies mental toughness, someone who can be personally connected to the learner, can give leaders a more engaging, visceral learning experience."

Other mental toughness business experts cited in this article were Dr. Christine M. Riordan, Dean of the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver and Dr. Jason Selk, author of Executive Toughness and Director of Mental Training for the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team.

Bill Cole, MS, MA, is a mental toughness coach to athletes and coaches, politicians, professional speakers and trainers, executives and business professionals.
